National Shrine of St. Joseph, Mandaue City

The centuries old San Jose Church is the only church in the Philippines that has a life-like “Last Supper” with Jesus and his 12 apostles called Señor de Cena. It is one of the rarest religious relic in the orient. During the early years of the Spanish dominion in the Philippine archipelago, the church was the center of the Spanish authority. Catholic priests and missionaries preach Christianity as their first and important task upon reaching the Philippine shores.

In Mandaue, the Jesuits or the Society of Jesus controlled the religious affairs because they were barred from entering Cebu City by their rival religious order, the Augustinians and was forced to look places to minister the gospel northward from Cebu City. At first a small chapel was erected in Estancia. In 1601 the construction of the church started in its present location. The main part of the project was finished about 1638, but although the church was continually used, it suffered alterations and additions so that it was completed in its final form only in 1848.

Marian Sanctuary in Simala, Sibonga

The sanctuary of the Virgin Mary has become a pilgrim's destination because of a number of "miracles" attributed to it. In 1998, the statue reportedly "helped" stop the spread of a killer epidemic that plagued the municipality of Sibonga, Cebu.

A decade hence, religious devotees continue to flock to the site for pilgrimage. Every 13th of the month, the shrine draws tens of thousands of visitors. Those seeking divine intervention would leave written prayers and intentions. Some would come to offer gratitude and honor promises.

The sanctuary is located at Upper Lindogon in Barangay Simala and run by the Marian Monks of the Eucharistic Adoration. Is is open daily from 6 am to 6 pm. Masses are held on Saturdays, Sundays and every 13th day of the month.

Situated at the northern tip of Cebu, Bantayan Island is well-known for its powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. Visitors find it comparable to world-famous Boracay less the crowd.

Bantayan is considered as the Lenten capital of the Visayas. During the Holy Week, both locals and visitors gather at the town center to be part of the Lenten procession.
